My siblings and I were home alone a lot. I was able to satiate my curiosity in healthy ways like reading- at the library, at home, wherever I could. Fortunately, from there I discovered writing, and began writing poetry to express myself creatively, not even realizing that I was keeping myself out of trouble!
I want to make sure that every child is given the same opportunities to learn and grow from a passionate love for the arts, just like I did. However, that's not the case for many in our communities.
There is no doubt that we're living in unprecedented times. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the cost of living has soared, and charitable giving is down. It's truly been a struggle over the last few years to keep our spirits up, but we didn't do it alone! We had the arts to inspire hope, assuage our boredom, and refocus our dreams. That kind of focus takes imagination, and imagination is TAUGHT! If we're asking children to adapt and succeed, we have to give them the tools to do it!
Reading and writing are those tools.
By supporting The Writer's Garret, you are supporting after school and Summer programs for children in underserved communities, writing programs for distressed teens, adult writing classes in your community, veteran's writing workshops, spoken word performances, and much more!
I'm asking you to donate to help reach my goal of $1,000 (including a $500 match $1 for $1) this North Texas Giving Day!
Thank you for considering us and regards!
