Aztec was given to the Camp through our neighbor and long time supporter Melonie Brown.
This horse is a calm, easy rider but always hungry. As most people know, horses graze about 22 of the 24 hours every day, getting most of their nutrition from grasses (or dried grass which is hay). But Aztec does not have any molars, so she can bite off the grass but cannot chew it into smaller pieces before swallowing, so spits out cuds of undigested grass. What we have to do is to soak alfalfa cubes to provide her the bulk of her diet along with horse feed.
Morning feeding 3 quarts of 14% horse pellets + 1 quart alfalfa
Mid day feeding 2 gallons of soaked alfalfa
Evening feeding 3 quarts of 14% horse pellets + 1 quart alfalfa
So what we need for Aztec is dental care and the cost for the grains to keep her at the proper weight.
