For over a year of her marriage and in the aftermath of leaving, Jeanette faced various forms of abuse. With the support of Hope’s Door New Beginning Center (HDNBC), she found the strength to rebuild her life with healing and joy.
From the start, Jeanette’s marriage was turbulent. One day, her husband’s accusation of missing a funeral escalated into violence. He grabbed her, called her names, and choked her, leaving her terrified.
But Jeanette found courage to call for help. Though she was wrongly arrested, her mother bailed her out. However, her husband, a skilled lawyer, manipulated the situation, draining their accounts and leaving her financially stranded and traumatized in a hotel.
A friend introduced her to HDNBC, where she found the support she desperately needed. Through therapy and individual sessions, she began her journey to healing. “I love her. I would not be where I am today without Kaira and HDNBC. It works,” she says.
With HDNBC’s help, Jeanette filed for divorce and obtained a protective order. Her ex’s revenge porn attempt backfired, resulting in his arrest and the dropping of false charges against her. Further investigation revealed his history of abuse.
He was sentenced, and Jeanette finally obtained a lifetime protective order. Writing her impact statement empowered her, giving her back control.
Three years later, Jeanette continues to attend therapy sessions, sharing her story and offering hope to others. The counseling program changed her profoundly, helping her understand and break the cycle of abuse.
“I am not the same person today as I was three years ago,” she says. “I found myself again.”
Through HDNBC, Jeanette had the chance to address law enforcement, highlighting her experience and advocating for better support for survivors. She’s determined to raise awareness about domestic abuse and empower others to seek help.
“Abuse can happen to anybody. I never thought it would happen to me,” she says. “But there’s hope, help, and a way out. Participating in the counseling program at HDNBC is the best, most empowering decision you will ever make.”
