Established in December 1997, the Dallas Hearing Foundation (DHF) was founded to address the critical needs of deaf children and adults by providing specialized treatments for their hearing impairment. DHF aims to enable deaf individuals to hear, speak, attend mainstream schools, and pursue careers of their choice by offering financial assistance for hearing aids, cochlear implants, related medical expenses, and auditory-verbal therapy. It is DHF's mission to provide comprehensive support in medical, technological, rehabilitative, and educational domains to every hearing-impaired child and adult regardless of access to insurance coverage or financial means.
According to surveys and studies:
- About 2% of the 16-64 age group are deaf in Texas.
- 2 to 3 out of every 1,000 children in the United States are born deaf or hard of hearing.
- Texas has the 2nd highest deaf population in the country
Cost Breakdown
The costs associated with cochlear implants, hearing aids, and necessary therapies often render them inaccessible to families facing economic constraints. With limited reimbursement options from private health insurance and government programs, as well as the complete absence of coverage in some health policies, DHF has seen a yearly increase in applications from those in dire need of these essential devices and services.
Last Year's Impact:
- 5 cochlear implant recipients totaling $175,000*
- 18 hearing aid recipients totaling $50,400*
- $21,000 in auditory-verbal services provided
- $32,000 in audiological services provided
- $44,000 in auditory surgery expenses provided
