THERE IS A NEED.
1 in 3 Texans will be a victim of Intimate Partner Violence in their lifetime. Women impacted by poverty have fewer resources to escape abusive relationships, but when they do, homelessness can become a consequence. Family Gateway reported that 40-50% of the homeless population are families, mostly composed of a single mother with her two young children. Innocent kids witness and are often the victims of abuse as well. Unfortunately, Tarrant County is ranked the third highest Texas county with confirmed child abuse cases by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Children from families with low socioeconomic status are five times more likely to experience abuse or neglect in their lives according to the CDC. Childhood victimization can lead to repeating abuse patterns, failing to graduate, drug and alcohol abuse, depression, and criminal activity that continues into adulthood.
THERE IS HELP.
The Texas Advocacy Project shared that protective orders are as much as 80% effective in reducing future violence. Methodist Justice Ministry (MJM) offers crucial legal advocacy for victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and child neglect. Our attorneys seek the safest resolutions for our clients through protective orders,
custody, and divorce judgments for households experiencing poverty. MJM represents the victims of abuse, or their protective caregiver, in cases that are often complex and require tremendous preparation for court. Each matter can last from a couple of months to years. These litigations can cost up to tens of thousands of dollars in family courts, but MJM covers all legal fees for our clients.THERE IS HOPE.
MJM also offers hope beyond the courtroom for a safe and stable future. Our staff walks alongside clients offering support services including Counseling Services and the Safe Home Program (emergency financial assistance) to help reconstruct their independence. Since being established in 2006, MJM has filed over 1,200 cases which represent 3,000 individuals overcoming crisis.
During the June 2024 State Bar of Texas Leaders Luncheon, MJM was presented with the Pro Bono Award. It is an honor to be recognized by our legal community, and the staff is committed to continuing our life-changing mission.
The mission of the Methodist Justice Ministry (MJM) is to provide free legal representation and ongoing support to vulnerable community members impacted by family violence, child abuse, and child neglect.
Through your financial support, MJM can continue to provide free legal representation and support services to some of our community's most vulnerable members. This year, it is estimated that MJM attorneys will file 120 new lawsuits for protective orders, custody, and divorce judgements, protecting over 300 community members. MJM will also have counseling and emergency financial assistance available to over 3,000 current and former clients to help them transition and maintain a safe environment.
MJM is committed to equal opportunity. We will not discriminate against anyone on any legally-recognized basis including, but not limited to: veteran status, uniform service member status, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, genetic information, or any other protected class, under federal, state, or local law.
