WLT STEAAM Architecture Challenge for Girls!
Women Leading Technology goal is to help increase opportunities for girls and women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture, the Arts, and Math (STEAAM) education and careers – individuals who, as a whole, are an underrepresented community. Subsequently, our mission is to create avenues for girls to attend the WLT centers that empower them for the future through hands-on learning experiences in STEAAM. Our initiatives are centered on raising awareness and funds to support a much-needed resource, which is designed to address the lack of diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I).
While strides have been made to promote girls and women in STEAAM, much more work is needed in this area. Through the STEAAM Experience for Girls, WLT is rolling up our sleeves and putting the work in to change this reality. Our fundraising efforts bring the community together to raise dollars for STEAAM education. Donated proceeds will allow girls to attend an amazing hands-on STEAAM challenge with real-life experiences in efforts to get girl interested in Architecture.
WLT Architecture STEAAM Challenge for is for girls from Pre-K through high school. During the months of January through April the girls will come together to learn the principles of what it takes to become an architect while learning the art of finances.
The girls will design life-size 96X 80 4FT tall model homes. They will work in a team of 6. They will learn to use architect design software to create blueprints. They will select their building materials, and the teams will build their desired model homes with the guidance of a current female industry architect and the female architecture college students as the project manager. The college students will work under the leadership of the female architect. We are grateful to be partnered with University of Texas Dallas. The 3-month event will be hosted at their beautiful UTD- IQ Richardson, Texas location.
The girls will compete for scholarships. The funds will be used for the advancement of their education for a career in STEAAM education.
In efforts to make the program available to working high school and college students, WLT will pay a stipend for the missed hours for the 3-months of Saturdays they will miss work. This is a pilot program that will be filmed. High school and college film students that will film, edit and produce the pilot.
